In our ongoing commitment to bridge the digital divide, Digitunity recognizes the critical role of reliable and accessible technology in empowering underrepresented communities. Through research and direct feedback from our network, including a comprehensive survey conducted in March 2024 with 110 digital inclusion organizations, we have garnered valuable insights that shape our approach to recommending specifications for large-screen devices.
These suggestions aim to guide but are not limited to, recognizing that any contribution has value in our collective efforts to close the digital divide. This commitment ensures that our efforts are not only about providing technology but also about enhancing the usability and impact of these devices in real-world applications.
Device Age
We aim to target devices 5 years old or newer when possible. This approach seeks to balance the need for contemporary software support with the realities of hardware availability. Our survey found that 76.9% of organizations prefer devices no older than 1-5 years.
RAM
We suggest a minimum of 8 gigabytes of RAM. This specification is advised to ensure functionality for most applications, yet we value any contributions that can help bridge the technology gap. The survey showed that 53.8% of respondents deploy devices with 8-16 gigabytes of RAM
Storage Space
We aim to ensure a minimum of 128 gigabytes of storage space. This capacity is suggested to meet general usage needs, understanding that any device capable of storing and running essential software is a step towards digital access. The survey revealed that 72.7% of organizations deploy devices offering 128-256 gigabytes
Drive Type
We prioritize solid-state drives (SSDs) as the preferred option for their speed and reliability. However, the contributions of devices with hard disk drives (HDDs) are also valued for their potential to enhance digital access. The survey found that 89.2% of organizations utilize SSDs
Operating System
Considering broad compatibility and support, we suggest devices running Windows. Nonetheless, devices with alternative operating systems contribute valuably to our goal of universal computer ownership. The survey showed that 77.8% of devices run Windows.
These suggested minimum specifications can guide decision-making and optimize digital inclusion efforts. Digitunity recognizes the importance of flexibility and inclusivity when selecting a large-screen device. Our partners, practitioners, and donors are encouraged to consider these suggestions as broad guidelines rather than strict requirements. Every device, irrespective of its specifications, brings us closer to ensuring that everyone who needs a computer has one.
